Throughout the State, plea bargaining for a reduced charge is permitted. This can sometimes carry a higher fine but a greater financial gain in the long term by avoiding costly increases in insurance premiums or points on your record.
New Jersey Traffic Violations & Penalties
Driver License Compact
The Driver License Compact is an agreement between most States in which they share traffic violations and suspensions between each other.
This means that a violation or suspension of driving privileges in New Jersey will likely be shared with your home State if you do not hold a New Jersey license.
*Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, Massachusetts and Tennessee do not participate.
New Jersey State Surcharges
In addition to any fines associated with your ticket or fines imposed by the Court, the State of New Jersey may also assess an additional penalty for the accumulation of 6 or more points within three years from your most recent violation and for additional violations.
For the first 6 points you will receive a surcharge of $150 per year for three years. It will be an additional $25 for each additional point above 6 for the same three year period.
Suspensions & Persistent Vioolators
If you accumulate 12 or more points your license / driving privileges in the State of New Jersey will be suspended. This suspension is a minimum of 30 days if the points were accumulated within the past two years and can be longer based on the amount of points and time since accrual.
Defensive Driving Classes & Removal Of Fines
Any convictions or points accumulated will remain on your Motor Vehicle Commission record for your lifetime. However, it is possible to obtain a point deduction by completing a driving course approved by the State. Maintaining a good driving record can also earn point deductions.
