Changing Your Name In New Jersey

New Jersey residents may change their name by filing an application with the court – by submitting a verified complaint and certificate of confidential information. Additionally, an order fixing a hearing date must be submitted along with a civil case information statement, and a filing fee in the amount of $250.00.

The application will then be set for a court hearing, whereby an appearance may be required. At this hearing, the Court will determine whether such an application shall be granted. While these applications are rarely denied, it is important for the court to assure that this name change is not being requested to avoid criminal prosecution, to avoid debts, or other such improper purposes.

Should the application be granted, additional steps are required in order to assure the name change is properly recorded. This includes submitting a final judgment to the Department of Treasury and Registrar of Vital Statistics.
